Sandhill Crane

Gray overall, with dull skin on the crown and lores; whitish chin, cheek and upper throat with blackish primaries. Breeds on tundra in marshes and grasslands and winters to the south. Present in Texas from October through February. Flies with long neck outstretched and legs trailing far behind. Feeds on small animals and aquatic life, insects, grain, green shoots and berries.
