One of a large number of birds that frequent coastal areas known as shorebirds Striking black and white head and bib, black and chestnut back and orange legs in breeding plumage. In flight shows a striking dark and white pattern on the back. Breed on Artic tundra and present in our area in Winter, Spring and Fall. Found on beaches, mud flats, rocky shorelines and on jetties. Turns over seaweed and small stones and feeds on small crustaceans hidden beneath them.
