A medium sized, tropical, highly pelagic, dark brown tern with grayish-white forehead, black bill and legs and a long wedge-shaped tail.
Dips down to snatch surface prey rather than plunge diving like other terns. Nests in the Dry Tortugas.
A rare bird on our shores, confirmed sightings may be as few as fifteen of this species in coastal Texas.
The best opportunities to encounter one will be on the PINS beach in June and July.
