American Bittern

-Botaurus lenliginosus-   

Mottled brown upper parts with brownish neck streaks.  Stands with its beak pointing skyward, well camouflaged among reeds.  Present in Texas September through April.  One of our most unusual birds, its numbers are declining due to loss of marsh habitat.
